CHISOM

Class of 2021
Favorite Food - Plantains

Q

You have arrived - your senior year! What is the most valuable lesson you have taken from your time as an ABC Scholar?

A

The most valuable lesson I learned in ABC is to appreciate the people and opportunities that are present in your life at the moment. Often when we are in the heat of life it can be easy to point out the negatives or downplay the experiences that we are going through. It’s usually after a while that we reflect on how these people were part of our process and how those opportunities taught us core values and exposed us to the world. For me, the program is like a second home and I’m sure one day I’m going to look back and see how much my perspective has changed on a lot of things.

Q

Looking back, what would senior Chisom like to tell freshman Chisom? Or, in other words, what piece of advice would you like to give to incoming freshman Scholar Mekhi?

A

Take your time. With everything from making friends, grades, food, etc. It’s all new and it’s okay to feel like it’s a lot at once. Do it at your own pace and don’t look at what others are doing.

Q

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A

There’s not really one specific career I think I’m going to be in because I have many interests. I’m interested in becoming a physician and being part of decision making in the public health field for the general health of all. I also have an artistic side so maybe become a film director or dance on the side, but the medical field aspect is kind of on the front lines, especially at this time.

Q

What do you plan to do following graduation? How has ABC helped you with this goal?

A

After graduation I want to go to college, obviously. I want to travel more and find and build my own sense of community outside my home and the program as a wiser version of myself. The program has definitely helped me develop these skills little by little in the past 4 years. I just think the world needs more togetherness (6 ft. apart of course) especially in this time of isolation and separation.
